Supporting Public Transportation With Weichai’s Certified BS VI Engine

Feb 22, 2023 By : Vikash | Views : 3877

The increasing pollution levels have become a concern for both the environment and human health. So much so, that the need to adopt eco-friendly and sustainable measures are the need of the hour.

BS VI engines by Weichai India are developed using state-of-the-art technology that cut down on emissions that lead to air pollution. With a mission to contribute to a cleaner India, we are committed to empowering on-highway vehicles with gasoline engines that emit lower emissions.

In this blog, we discuss how Weichai’s sustainable transportation solutions are paving the path toward a more eco-friendly future.

Going Green with Weichai’s BS VI Engines

Pollution levels in megacities like Delhi make the headlines of the news quite frequently. Especially in recent years, the nation’s capital has been witness to extreme levels of suspended particulate matter (PM) and degrading air quality index (AQI).

Bus on the road

The majority of the emissions are contributed by vehicles like public buses, which are old yet ply on the roads to date. What risk do these vehicles pose towards the increasing pollution levels? They operate on traditional engines which are not as efficient and also emit significant amounts of pollutants that include:

  • Carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
  • Hydrocarbon (HC), and
  • Particulate matter (PM).

To curb pollution levels, Weichai’s robust BS VI engines are becoming popular in the on-highway public transport market. These low emission engines come in compliance with the current emission norms (BS VI_OBD I) and ready for complying with the next phase of emission norms (BS-VI_OBD II) which will be applicable from April 1, 2023.

The certification states that low emission engines by Weichai are backed up by the latest technology that restricts vehicles from discharging more NOx. Today, several buses are powered by BS VI engines as a part of the measures to lower the extent of pollution. This is a step towards bringing a cleaner source of power to the streets of Delhi.

Advantages of Gas Engines by Weichai

Being the leading manufacturer of gas engines in India, Weichai offers high-functioning and robust gas engines. Since a lot depends on the quality of the engines installed in the on-highway vehicles, we aim to excel with every unit of Weichai engines.

Manufactured in a modern facility in Pune, our BS VI engines have the highest levels of efficiency and power. Let’s get familiar with the advantages of gasoline engines by Weichai.

  • Superior-Quality Build And Design

The build and the efficiency of gas engines significantly reduce the on-highway traffic Carbon Monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM), Non-Methane hydrocarbons (NMHC), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) in the environment.

We make the engines go through numerous levels of mechanical and physical quality checks and tests to ensure they deliver the highest performance.

  • Lowered Emissions of Harmful Gases

It is known that gasoline engines typically produce lower levels of emissions. Due to the low carbon content (CO2) across fossil fuels, engines that run on gas produce lesser emissions naturally.

However, that is only when the engines are efficient enough. Weichai produces gas engines that are BS VI certified, which employ technology to reduce the emission of NOx to a great extent.

Make efficient use of the fuel which reduces the release of gases due to the incorporation of catalytic converters and particulate filters which further reduces harmful emissions. This is what makes our engines an environmentally-friendly choice.

  • Reduced Noise Levels

Commercial transportation requires more power to operate than regular on-highway vehicles. Heavy-duty engines often cause a lot of noise, which is unpleasant and contributes to sound pollution.

Weichai BS VI engines operate more quietly than conventional engines. It is because these gas engines are ignited by a spark plug instead of a compression mechanism. This feature makes them a good choice for applications where noise levels need to be kept to a minimum, such as in residential areas, and even on roads.

  • Lower Fuel Costs

Fuel costs can be quite high for public transportation like buses. Since the vehicles have to run on elaborate routes, their fuel consumption is much higher. However, efficient gas engines reduce the loss of fuel by generating higher RPMs (rotations-per-minute). It is this efficiency that significantly lowers the refueling and operations costs, in the long run.

  • Reduced Maintenance Requirements

Commercial vehicles in particular require frequent maintenance sessions to ensure safe and proper functioning. However, with more upkeep sessions, owners risk having longer downtimes and idle periods. This also includes the repeated costs related to maintenance.

With highly efficient BS VI engines by Weichai, the need for frequent upkeep is reduced, which makes them hassle-free, and cost-efficient – yielding more returns.

Weichai Engine’s Role In Advancing Public Transportation in Delhi

Weichai India has recently taken steps to play a part in fulfilling and contributing towards the mission of empowering vehicles with Green Power. Through our superior quality sustainable transportation solutions, including BS VI engines, we aim to maximise customer satisfaction while reducing the impact on nature.

Today, a number of vehicles and public transport in particular on the streets of Delhi run on gas engines by Weichai. Since Delhi has reported some of the worst air quality in recent times, it is imperative to adopt alternative measures. The higher efficiency levels coupled with the lowered emissions by Weichai’s engines, together contribute to a sustainable source of power.

FAQs

Q.1. What is a BS VI engine and how is it different from BS IV or BS III engines?

BS VI (Bharat Stage VI) is the latest emission standard in India, implemented on April 1, 2020. The primary objective is to significantly reduce harmful pollutants like NOx, PM, CO, and HC compared to earlier BS IV or BS III engines.

Let’s take a look:

Emission Standards For Light-Duty Petrol Vehicles:

  • BS III: 2.3 g/km CO, 0.2 g/km HC, and 0.15 g/km NOx.
  • BS IV: 1 g/km CO, 0.1 g/km HC, and 0.08 g/km NOx.
  • BS VI: CO and HC limit the same, but NOx dropped to 0.06 g/km and PM was introduced at 0.0045 g/km.

Emission Standards Light-Duty Diesel Vehicles:

  • BS III:  0.64 g/km CO, 0.5 g/km NOx, and 0.05 g/km PM.
  • BS IV: CO to 0.5 g/km, NOx to 0.39 g/km, and kept PM limits similar.
  • BS VI: NOx down to 0.06 g/km, PM to 0.0045 g/km, with HC + NOx at just 0.068 g/km.

Two/Three-Wheelers:

  • BS III: 1 g/km CO and 1 g/km HC + NOx.
  • BS IV: CO to 1.97 g/km, with NOx capped at 0.39 g/km.
  • BS VI: CO to 1 g/km, NOx to 0.08 g/km, and added PM limit at 0.0045 g/km.

Q.2. Are BS VI engines more fuel-efficient than traditional engines?

Yes, Weichai’s BS VI gas engines have better combustion efficiency, which improves fuel usage, reduces fuel consumption and operational costs for public transportation fleets.

Q.3. Do BS VI engines require frequent maintenance?

No, Weichai engines are designed for high durability which reduces maintenance needs.

Q.4. Are there any benefits of using BS VI gas engines in public buses?

Yes, Weichai BS VI bus engines are eco-friendly, consume lower fuel, reduce maintenance costs, and engine downtime.
